Bolsover Castle

(English Heritage - http://www.english-heritage.org.uk)

Six miles East of Chesterfield, on the A632, Bolsover Castle looks like it's out of a fairytale - a thicket of battlements and domed towers rises from a wooded hilltop, dominating the surrounding landscape. It is a castle only in name. Built on the site of a genuine Norman castle, most of what you see today is in fact a 17th century mansion. The elaborate mock-medieval fortifications belong to the "Little Castle", a romantic folly decorated with fanciful wall paintings and intricate carved marble fireplaces.

You can also visit the 17th century Riding School - one of Europe's oldest and as important in its time as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna is today.

Check for special events - Exhibitions at the Riding School in the Master's Lodge, Wellington’s Army, Medieval Entertainment, Medieval Combat, and Falconry.  Open April through to 31 st October, daily 10 am - 6 pm (5 pm in October) 1st November through to 31st March, Wednesday through Sunday 10 am to 4 pm Closed 24 - 26 December and New Year's day. Peveril Castle

(English Heritage - http://www.english-heritage.org.uk)

Located on the south side of Castleton, 15 miles west of Sheffield on the A625, Peveril Castle is perched high on a crag and surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery in the Peak District. The ruins of Peveril Castle rise above the little market town of Castleton as a dramatic reminder of another age.

Looking out from the castle's snaking walls at the panoramic view across the Hope Valley, it is easy to see why William Peveril, one of William the Conqueror's most trusted knights, chose this site for his fortifications. From its dramatic situation on a triangular spur high above the town, Peveril commanded any approach from West, East and South and a high stone wall, which is virtually still complete,  guarded the North side.

Parking for Cars 500m away. Open April through to September daily 10.00am - 6.00 pm October through to March, open Tuesday through Sunday 10 am - 4.00 pm  Tel: 01433 620613
